This week I have been mostly playing… 21/5-27/5/2024

Dota 2 – PC

Who knew I could ever begin to enjoy myself after 13 years and a couple thousand hours playing this game.

They’ve updated the game which incentivises trying characters outside of your comfort zone in order to earn some fugging goodies. Which has basically led me to playing Rubick. He exists to steal spells from the enemy – requires a new level of engagement that I’ve not really cared to offer in the past. But now, I’m having immense fun.

Helps that I’m completely muted – I no longer rage so new year, new me.

Shoutout to the rudimentary fishing game that’s scratching the itch.

Demon’s Souls – PlayStation 5

I have a fraught relationship with the Soulsborne games – some of the greatest world building and exploration in gaming with combat mechanics that I just don’t get on with at all. I always end up buying them, trying to convince myself that it’s going to be different this time, that I will master them.

But I end up just giving up, turned off by some janky mechanic; usually it’s falling off the world because the movement feels so imprecise.

I was inspired though – watching Kai Cenat bludgeon his way through Eldin Ring made me want to at least complete the game I have in front of me rather than purchasing Eldin [again]. Watching MissMikkaa too – an absolute pro at these games but still had the patience and serenity to not rage and punch a packet of biscuits every time she died.

So I returned to Demon’s Souls, having stopped at precisely the point I stopped on PlayStation 3 – awaiting to get fisted by The Flamelurker.

Did it “first” try – I mean I barely did anything, I was getting fisted, ate some salads and whittled away his health like this series has whittled away my patience.

Few more boss fights and I had my fill – but I’m wanting to finish the game off and try to understand why so many people have fallen in love with the games in the first place.
