Quick Review Ting: Persona 5

I finally did it, finally managed to finish the game. Taking me well over 100 hours, which appears to be dreadfully slow compared to all the other Persona savants that seem to know everything without ever having to use the internet for help.

It really is a strange game that is full of many faults; if another was to say that they attempted to give it a real go but just couldn’t get past the inconsistent/insulting tone, it’s pedestrian-like pacing or its monotonous dungeon crawling; I wouldn’t really be able to offer much in defence. It really is guilty of all of those things.

It attempts to use quite serious and adult matters which includes sexual abuse but in its execution, it just comes off as a cheap ploy to garner sympathy for its characters/demonstrate the malevolence of its enemies.

There are some great, great moments in this game and for example, I did really enjoy its battle mechanic (which I finally was able to get to grips with by the end of the game). Its presentation is probably the best I’ve seen in gaming for a number of years – I don’t know how, but it somehow ties everything together in a way which makes you more willing to accept the game’s faults. I would also say, having been lucky enough to go to Tokyo, spotting familiar places and metro stations allowed me to warm to this game (which, admittedly, is deeply personal).

The music is stellar. Like, really, really stellar.

The boss fights are consistently the worst gaming part of this game. All the things you learn along the way just goes out the window – more of a slug fest than a carefully executed tag-team-synchronised bashing.

It’s full of personality, confidence and real charm but a game that I would really struggle to recommend to others.
