How I met Super Mario Kart

Firstly, in order to justify having accidentally spent more money paying for WordPress Whatever, I decided to write something to prove that I’m doing more than just buying computer games.

So I will start with a series that is near and dear to my heart – Super Mario Kart (not trying to show off that I can rhyme). It all began on my 8th birthday, where my father thought it would be best to get me a game that I’ve always wanted. I think that might have been the last actual time he bought me a game directly, ever since then he’s looked at me disapprovingly and thinks that I’ve spent too much blood and treasure on games (and he’s 100% right).

So off we go with my older brother to W H Smith’s in Lewisham. For those that don’t know, W H Smith was a huge chain that sold stationary, it was where we prepared for school and bought our magazines too. Back then, the one in Lewisham was massive; with a huge entertainment section, a massive wall dedicated to games, another to CDs and tapes, VHS and the like.

My older brother really wanted to get NBA Jam, he was coercing me throughout the day to get that over Super Mario Kart. Once we had arrived, we were confronted by a wall of SNES boxes, with only their spines showing. My father and I were scanning all over, we both couldn’t find the bloody box, it was like trying to find a spelling mistake in an essay after spending all night writing the damn thing. My brother, in his infinite wisdom, found Super Mario Kart and thought it would be best to pick it up and try and hide the box rather than just leaving it where it was and hope we continued to miss it.

As soon as he picked the box up, I seized it, shouting “there it is, thanks bro”.

Ever since then, a fugging obsession.

P.S. we borrowed NBA Jam from someone that lived on our estate and smashed its fugging box in.
